Laundry Attendant

Primary Role:

The Laundry Attendant is responsible for ensuring safe, hygienic, and timely processing of all hospital linen and garments in compliance with infection prevention and control standards, thereby contributing to patient comfort, staff efficiency, and overall quality of care within a mental health care environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect, sort, wash, dry, iron, fold, and distribute hospital linen, patient clothing, and staff uniforms.
  • Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines when handling soiled or contaminated linen.
  • Segregate linen appropriately (infectious, non-infectious, patient personal clothing, staff uniforms).
  • Operate laundry machines and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure timely turnaround and continuous supply of clean linen to wards and departments.
  • Inspect linen for stains, damage, or excessive wear and report for replacement or repair.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of the laundry area at all times.
  • Monitor and report low stock levels of detergents, disinfectants, and other laundry supplies.
  • Label, track, and safeguard patient clothing to prevent loss or mix-ups.
  • Maintain patient dignity, confidentiality, and respectful handling of all items.
  • Comply with occupational health and safety requirements, including proper use of PPE.
  • Report equipment breakdowns, safety hazards, and incidents promptly.
  • Work collaboratively with ward staff, housekeeping, and infection control teams.
  • Support emergency, outbreak, and high-demand laundry needs as directed by management.
  • Any other duty as may be assigned

KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of infection control, hygiene standards, and safe handling of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and follow instructions accurately.
  • Good communication skills and a compassionate, respectful attitude toward patients.
  • Physically fit

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • K.C.S.E certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Certificate or training in hospitality
  • Prior experience in a hospital, mental health facility, or healthcare setting is highly desirable.
