Pharmacy Technicians

Primary Role:

To ensure the safe, accurate, and timely dispensing, storage, and management of medicines, while supporting rational drug use and patient safety in a mental health care environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accurately dispense prescribed medications in accordance with prescriptions, hospital policies, and legal requirements
  • Review prescriptions for completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness and clarify queries
  • Provide medication counseling to patients and caregivers on proper use, side effects, and adherence
  • Manage storage, handling, and security of medicines, including controlled and psychotropic substances
  • Maintain accurate pharmacy records, registers, and electronic dispensing systems
  • Monitor stock levels, expiry dates, batch numbers, and initiate timely re-ordering
  • Receive, verify, and document pharmaceutical supplies from approved vendors
  • Participate in pharmaco-vigilance activities, including reporting of adverse drug reactions
  • Support clinicians in medication monitoring, dose adjustments, and therapeutic outcomes
  • Ensure compliance with pharmacy laws, regulations, and hospital S.O.Ps
  • Maintain cleanliness, orderliness, and infection prevention standards within the pharmacy
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with nurses and clinicians to ensure continuity of medication therapy
  • Participate in patient safety programs and multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Uphold confidentiality, ethics, and professionalism at all time.
  • Any other duty as may be assigned

KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of psychiatric medications and controlled drugs will be an advantage
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology
  • Registered and licensed by the relevant professional body
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a hospital pharmacy setting (mental health experience is an added advantage)
